Factory 4x4 Prototype (Quadra) finished restoration
« on: October 20, 2013, 05:02:06 PM »
Hi all.

This is Dad's project. You may remember it from Wagga when it broke the gearbox. What started off as an engine bay tidy developed into a full blown nut and bolt restoration....

It's the factory 4x4 prototype. This was completed, then 3 or 4 others as a pre-production run were made, of which only one survives. I'm told it's in Perth or something? Anyway.

-edit-
The photos were meant to be bigger than that....
If anybody wants bigger, just ask.

-second edit-
If you click on them, they go to their proper size.
I still have yet bigger available if anybody cares.

Not soon enough. Dad said something about preserving the paint, but I'll try convince him... I don't know how long he can resist.

Should probably fix the rose joints in the rear first though, the back moves around so much it steers itself through the corners.

Just a bit.
Early Triumph Herald (I think) rear end. I have absolutely no idea why they used such a terrible design, but they did.

I'm told that the surviving pre-production car used Mini trailing arms, but cannot confirm.
That would've fixed a lot of the problems that this one has, with massive positive camber when the rear is unloaded under braking or off-roading.

Hi all.

This is Dad's project. You may remember it from Wagga when it broke the gearbox.

This was the repair (read redsign, serious loss of hair, many sleepless nights, lots of long hours / days) to the gearbox

https://www.mokeforum.com.au/index.php/topic,8716.0.html

There was also some discussion about the various 4WD Mokes too

https://www.mokeforum.com.au/index.php/topic,8731.0.html

Looking forward to seeing some scratches on the paint or rather doing what it was designed to do ;)

Mmmmm, doesn't actually have trailing arms there mate, just something a bit more diabolical  ;D

I hadn't seen either of those threads.
Some incredible machine work there, must respect.

But, the true question.... Will it be able to do WRC-style AWD burnouts in the dirt?

Kidding.

But yeah.
We haven't actually had it in 4x4 yet  ::) because there's no reason to.

It melted a couple of wires a few weeks ago, and that was all finished today.

All that's left now is the rose joints, decals made up, the roof painted, and then it gets driven.

Questions, anybody?

Its looking really good there Oldmate ;D
Some seriously good work gone into the whole resteration by the looks of it. Very nice 8)
A shame I missed it in action in Wagga, but it was fun having dinner with you guys there. :).
Id like to hear how Qudra goes in 4wd mode now with all that machining work done.

Yeah, there's been lots of time spent. You wouldn't believe the things that had to be created and modified. The link between the gearbox and gear selector took forever to get right.

I can't wait to see what it's like either.

Well, truth be told, forget the dirt, I did see Max - the guy who originally built it - light her up in Donald St, St Marys (SA) once, but the other guys who there said he did that all the time ;)

No kidding :)

The other one in Perth is for sale, I went and looked at it last year.  It belongs to a guy who owns a transmission workshop about 5 mins away from me.

It is in pieces, he wants $30K for it and he cant get the 4x4 sorted.

Could I ask a very important question, as I would like to make reference to this in my book I am writing on Mini & Moke production in Oz.
Does it have a build plate? If so are you able to supply the details without compromising confidentiality. Build month and Model Code eg 018FOB1M10 etc  and engine size would be sufficient if not.

Thanks in anticipation
