Bucket seat and seatbelts
« on: March 03, 2019, 12:04:45 PM »
Sorry if this has been asked before. I have finally tracked down a pair of mx5 seats I want to install in my 77 moke. I was only recently thinking of seat belts once they are in stalled. I assume that I will require inertia seatbelts? My rollbar/seatbelt mount does not have a reel mounting plate, so I was thinking of using the existing mount on the floor to attach the reel and the other end of the belt. It would keep the reel out of sight. Anyone every mounted them like this? Or are the lap straps fine for the mx 5 seats?

I just fitted some MX5 seats to mine but my car does have the inertia reels.  I found that the seat belt stalk isn't long enough to come up between the seats.  My stalks measure 300 mm, i think i need 400 mm to get them out from between the seats.

Hi,

The inertia belt only work properly when they are mounted vertically so you will need to make some sort of wedge or mount to keep the reel standing up straight otherwise you will not be able to recoil the belt.

Hi.  The regs on seatbelts are controlled by the compliance plate on your firewall. If your moke had lap belts when first registered that is the reg applicable to you. If you had a standard lap / sash belt that is the requirement. If you had inertial reel belts fitted on first registration the adr on the compliance plate dictates they are required. Trying to retro fit one system for another is not allowed by the regs. If you want to fit inertial belts to your moke the inertial part has to be fitted to the mounting plate on the roll bar as per manufacturers instructions. Racing harnesses are not allowed to be fitted in place off the adr seatbelts approved by the manufacturer. Just been through all this adr regs with my engineer

Thanks GUy's. Might stick with the lap belts for now then. Might have to get a plate fitted to the rollbar. Might have to see an engineer about mounting reel in the tub. Thanks again for your advice. I have been reading through the ADR's but i keep falling asleep.
