No, sorry Newie, the pump appear to be normally intact.
We will leave it open for another guess as to why I break down whilst I’m driving easily but have no problems whilst I flog the guts out of it.

Hi,

it is a the older Goss style pump which is actually the last you could service with a new kit but over time they degrade and although they limp along they will do strange things at times like stopping for no apparent reason?

The metal pipe coming from the outlet runs too close to the exhaust/manifold on its way to the carby and causes the fuel to evaporate?

And where is the spacer between the pump and the engine block. Without this being in place, my diagnosis is, the cam is pushing on a lower part of the pump arm and as such is only giving very small pumps of the diaphragm. So whilst driving at 1500 rpm no fuel is pumped, where as when reving at greater than 5000 rpm the fuel flows freely.

This is my diagnosis anyway

Hi,

not all pumps required a spacer. It varies between brands, in particular the length of the arms used.

If you have a pump that should have a spacer, in my experience it works for a little while and then breaks the arm off.

I will have a look and see if I can find an old Goss pump on an engine and let you know if it has a spacer or not.

Well I’m still having issues with this fuel pump but that is most likely because I haven’t done anything to correct the problem yet. It is going fine most of the time, though last Thursday I was stuck traveling slowly in traffic again and you guessed it, the Ant died on me again. Now knowing the problem, I just walked to the Servo, borrowed a small tin and took some fuel to the Ant and kept pouring some into the carbie and running it for a few seconds, then repeat, until my fuel filter and then fuel bowl were filled and he has run perfectly ever since. Though I did spend half an hour in the shed, going through my fuel section and have pulled out two different spacers. One is about 13mm thick and the other about 4mm, so now I need to work out which one I’ll use. I only want to pull this pump out once I want to get it right. I am pretty sure I have one somewhere about 8mm, I now want to find that one and try that.

Thoughts?

Well I know I have been missing in action for a while but today has been a Moke action day for me.
I’ll give you details of the second job first, this was a very sad job. Finally I have to concede the summer has ended in Tasmania. After about 9 month of enjoying a topless Moke, I have finally decided that if I want keep driving the Angry Ant, most days, I am going to have to put a roof back on.

Though before I refitted my canopy I discovered a new contender for the worst job on a Moke. As I can no longer fold my canopy down, I fitted a roll bar, last year. I decided there was no need to keep my good low back seats in the Angry Ant, I can refresh those ready to go back into Morton.

I managed to buy a set of older Choke seats and mounting brackets the other day to put in the back for the kids. I like the idea of a head rest for safety and they do look more comfortable for the light frames of the kids.
So fitting these was manageable but I can assure you they won’t be going in and out like the old low backs did, when ever I wanted Ute. This is an absolutely horrible job but the end result is good and I’m sure the kids will be happy when they find out, after school tomorrow.

Hey there Dev,
Have to agree, fitting the seats (Front or back) is the pits and by far my least favourite job ( even more than clutch and brake pivot pins)

They do look pretty good in there though.
So what was the clincher for the roof being fitted? Large build up of ice on the eye lashes? Frozen lips making the beer too cold when you got home each day?
Did you use all the standard hood bows, or did the roll bar form part of it?

Howdy folks,
Firstly Pete, the House reno’s went great. The stage we were hoping to achieve with the budgeted funds was achieved, plus the next stage. So that was a huge win. We have settled into our ‘new house’ and can’t believe we took so long to getting Reno’s started. It has made the house so much better that I am hoping to take on the next stages later this year, this will complete all I intend to do with this house. Budget for this next lot will be a lot less than last years work. Only other plans, other than my retirement home that I have are, another Moke shed with a hoist. Currently working through financial planning stages, to see how far I can dream. Though, I feel that last years Reno’s may get me a fair amount of leverage in my negotiations with SWMBO. (For our newer members SWMBO=She Who Must Be Obeyed, Swomby!)
And HP, reason for putting a canopy back on the Angry Ant were mainly that I didn’t want the new seats getting too wet, we had a few wet days forecast. I am using my standard canopy and standard frame, it all fits over the top of the cage.
Of course Murphy’s Law prevails again though and I now have a rather nasty leak coming from my bottom radiator hose, so this will need fixing this coming weekend.

Today is a sad (small sadness in comparison to NSW)

I took the hood off last year and have enjoyed driving topless, almost everyday since.

However as NSW can no long use all there rain, our weather forecast team have warned us in Tasmania, to be read for some of there left over clouds, that haven’t managed to empty completely. So this has made me put my canopy back on the Angry Ant.

I really hoped to make it until about August until I had to cover up.
