PART 3

Wok mod:

Wow! Is this the same engine? ;) ...and look at the modified wok 8) ... Bits'n'pieces being added:

And back in she goes. Note the thermo fan they managed to squeeze in :):

Even the exhaust has been spruced up and a nifty off-road mod has been done:

Biggles did his dash with us :o  (sorry ;))  ...A spare dash panel is sacrificed to enable the fitting of a removable face for access to the hard to get at gauge wiring:

What a mess!:

The engine bay certainly looks better now, with some more improvements to come:

Shock Absorber mount mod. ...Some mount strengthening and studs replaced with bolts:

...And here it is, a great mod well done by Biggles:

Well, that's it so far. They put the dash back together, and put the wheels on, and with a bit of fiddling, lined them up as best they could. After a few disappointing turns of the key, followed by a bit of messing around with the wiring and fuses and fuse holders etc etc (you know how it goes ;D) she started up so absolutely instantly, that it caught us all by surprise....pleasantly of course ;) :D  Mazy escorted her home from her stay at the Hangar late last Sunday and she ran well. Heaps still to do, but we flew out of there really really happy and so very appreciative of all that Biggles had done for us :)

More to come later...

g'day,
Well done Vicki and Alan. Nice story and pics.
Who was the old fat bloke using an angle grinder with
no guard or safety glasses?   :o

It was a great couple of weekends, totally absorbed
with and up to our armpits in all things moke. Not
to mention the laughs and company.
The only negative thing was all the stupid puns flying
left right and centre.   ::)

Great work guys, love the timing chain, has the joiner worn a groove in the
backing plate and did you find the missing bits?

G'day,
sorry smokey, time to work on the Rat. There was a lot of bodginess
found on that engine. That missing link Moe, wasn't the joining link, it was
still there. The oil slinger was damaged I assume by the link when it came
loose and got caught behind as it rattled around, but it we didn't find it.
The chain scoured the top of the timing cover but not certain why. Maybe
the"Missing link"(crap, mazy is rubbing off) rode around a few times before
it finally disappeared. The worrying thing we found was whoever fitted the
duel timing set up didn't counter sink the screws that hold the plate to the
block and they were proud of the surface and the chain had rubbed on one
screw wearing the burred pins on the back of the chain that link the chain
together.
one of many "what the heck' things we found and fixed.

Hi,

good to see some pictures and some work being done, more than what I have got to show. :)

Is Alan not eating Pork these days?

Wow, some fantastic work there by all concerned  8)

Well done to Alan and Biggles for all they've achieved over the couple of weekends in the face of the usual unexpected expected hurdles that go along with any and all Moke work  ::)

Vicki has done a fantastic job of bringing it all to life for the rest of us and I'm sure has been contributing in other ways (including, but I'm sure not limited to ensuring Biggles is kept fueled up with regular cups of tea  :)).

Looks like it'll finish up an awesome "bush ready" partner for Mazy.

One technical question...

Is the wok mod just a "because we can" thing after converting to the Gemini starter or is there a practical reason for it?

g'day Newie,
If its not being used, cutting it off frees up a little
bit of room in an otherwise cramped engine bay. Plus it
looks better :)

Hi all,

With renovating a house for sale, Moke repair/investigations had been put on the back burner since the last Tamworth. For those who remember, The Red One decided that the Liberal goverment's excessive fuel excise could no longer be tolerated & refused to do the mere 900klm's to go home.

Today we bit the bullet, with the help of the newly purchased engine crane, proceeded to investigate The Red One's intolerances.
We had to put the front up on stands, so the legs would fit under the sub frame. After removal and a bit a of persuasion with a rattle gun the flywheel unveiled her conundrum.
Her problem was that after a few adjustments in the Tamworth caravan park, a reasonably loud bang occurred & no gears were accessible forward or reverse.
In fact it could be started in any gear.

Here is.........

Has anyone seen or heard of this happening before on a Moke? Would the wear on the primary gear splines have caused this? Re: pressure under load. Also the inside bushes on the primary gear were scored. The crank is good.
Anyhow a new primary gear & clutch plate are on order, so after a shake down, a trip to The Corner Store hopefully seems doable.

Alan

I believe it is called lead foot syndrome. :)

Ive been wondering how you were going with it, given the house stuff and all  ;)
Finally stopped moving and have the lap top out.
Ive not seen that one happen before, but glad you found something easy to fix/ replace.
The wear on the primary gear teeth looks quite normal to me, not optimal of course, but in not too bad a condition and I doubt it had anything to do with your clutch plate imploding like it did. The seal face also looks in pretty good nic.
When was the last time the clutch was apart? Was it just before Tamworth?

How badly worn are the primary gear bushes?  Is it possible that with movement in the bushes, the primary gear has been flexing the clutch plate to the point it stress cracked around the centre like that?

Personally i would just tell everyone that the extreme horse power of the engine ripped the centre out of the clutch plate, sounds so much better than fatigue to me.

Glad to hear it isn't something too serious.

Cheers
Dave
