G'day Terry,

Yes I am familiar with that thread, i'll have to find it again and take a look at his jig.

I have welded some support bracing with cross braces in between the upper panniers to help hold things in place at the moment.

I will take diagonal measurements as I go and will brace up further when it comes to putting the main floorpan into place.

I will drop the car off its side when I do that.

Hi Guys..some Progress...

Welded in the fixed pans under the pannier boxes and sized up the main floor pan.

Took diagonal measurements of the body and it still is square.

I made a homemade Jig to flip it horizontally so I can weld in the main floorpan...

Thanks to this Forum...I could not have got this far without the help here!

Impressive work there Gizmo.

No small feat to get it to this stage. Many others have given up before now.

Keep up the good work.

Looks great, love how neat it looks. I always like it when the repair is factory looking and you need to look for the subtle things to work out if there has even been repairs.

Good job so far,

Thanks guys for the encouragement and positive feedback.

IT has been off the road now for two years...so I am wanting it back on the road by the end of the year.

I am getting ready to weld in the main floor, what treatments if any did you guys apply to the inner side walls of the main floor before welding to the pannier dividers and the angle pieces at the end of the outer pans?

The new pans are galvanised. I've got weld through primer which I was going to use but should there be something more permanent in there?

Hey Gizmo,

From your description I'm guessing you talking about the concealed triangle / void between the floor and side boxes. This is nicknamed the Bermuda Triangle by the Moke fraternity.
My body didn't need any repairs here but I always considered doing some form of preventative treatment as I don't know what it looks like in there after nearly 40 years.
Anyway what I was thinking of doing was drill some holes front and rear and maybe one or two along the underside of the triangle, use a fish oil or equivalent / modern product such as an epoxy, applied through the new holes.
Once application is complete seal up with blanking grommets.
Remove grommets every few years and re apply as per manufactures recommendation.
I haven't actually done this but it would have to have some value. I think  ;)

Cheers,

Al.

Hi,

I agree with Dj's method but would avoid fish oil because of the smell but there are other products that could slosh around and seal up in there.

Thanks Terry/Al for the replies.

I was thinking I should put an epoxy on both sides of the riser that is on the edge of the floor pan that welds onto the pannier divider/angle piece.

Then mark out where the welds will be and grind off those spots and coat with the weld through primer.

After that I was going to seal the floorpan underneath with KBS chassis coater and then run some sika 227 sealant along the join underneath where the boxes and floorpan meet and the outer edges of the pannier floor pans.

Al, were you going to drill those holes in the sideboxes internally?

Internally would work ok I reckon, and out of sight.
I also had thoughts about a hole front and back in the ends then make a hose applicator that feeds in through the ends if you put a series of holes in your applicator and block the end basically creating a sprinkler you could insert the applicator, pressurise, and slowly extract spraying all internal face as as you extract. Good in theory anyway.

Hi,
my holes are down around the heel of your foot on the inside wall and I use a horse syringe, a big body with a small'ish nozzle, and with the Xtroll product I use it goes in quick and would spray about a bit. For a bit more discretion you could put some holes closer to the set cross member, but I found it will seep out of any gaps all along the length of it.
I wouldn't be keen to seal up everything from underneath using a body sealer as it will mean that anything that does get in, including condensation, has no way to get out but to rust.

Thanks Al/Terry for the feedback.

I wont use that Sika sealer then, i'll only paint underneath.

I might drill up some holes in the inner pan now that correspond to the sidebox locations that take a suitable grommet before I weld it in.

That way I can spray the Xtroll that terry uses into these holes and get into the gap between that and the inner hull.

With regards to the inner pan side walls....I was going to plug weld that to the angle iron piece that sticks up from the edge of the outer pans, along with plug welding it to the pannier divider insides...is that the way the factory did it?

I couldn't tell as it was too rusted away before...I would think they would have spot welded there?

Hi,
have a look under the Body FAQ pages as MoeMoke did a diagram of how the panels overlap from the factory.
