Hi from CZECH Republic
« on: August 02, 2019, 04:45:32 AM »
Hello,
At the beginning of the year I bought MOKE which was auctioned from EBAY a few years ago and it was stored for approx. 3 years in the Czech Republic. Unfortunately, MOKE had no VIN or other license plates. However, today together with Pavel (there is also in the forum) we found shell VIN.

The shell is stamped
2242
YJBAV
2718B (24I8B or 2 / I8B or 27I8B) and 1748

The radiator has an original label from NEWCELL and the number AYK 2214.

Can anyone advise me on identifying this MOKE?
It should be probably an Australian MOKE (poorly improved by handyman), unfortunately I do not know the year of manufacture.
The original color should be white. I dont know the wheel size.
Front panel is in one piece (UK grill?)

thank you for any help

I also want to say big hello to all MOKE fans here.
I am a classic mini enthusiast, owner of two classic minis (1965 MK1 countryman and 1982 Pickup)
and this year I fall in love with MOKE, so here I am  ;D

Hi,

I have updated your account so you should now be able to post a picture or two of your Moke.

Welcome.

Welcome Cefo,

your red moke has some interesting body mods.
As for the body number, our Aussie mokes did use a YJ number from 1966 to around 1973 but they were YJBAB,

have a look here https://www.moke.com.au/about/identifying-mokes/677-body-numbers-yjbab for more info.

1976 Moke 1275cc (Dynky),
1976 Moke(Scarlet) current project,
1974 Moke with Suzuki GTI motor (project),
1975 Moke rust bucket,
1967 Moke rust bucket

Hi,

All those numbers on the radiator cowl is strange, many are normally stamped in the firewall and the YJBAV suggests someone has stamped the identity from a Mini Van onto your Moke.

If you post a picture of the rear trailing arm, where the shocker mounts, and the rear panel that will give an indication of whether it is a 10" or 13" wheel Moke and from that we can narrow down the age.

There are pictures around from about 10 or more years ago of your Moke when it first appeared in a shed in the UK with the mods to the guards, but still an unfinished project.

The Newcell badge on the radiator is the type fitted by the factory.

Hi Terry,
yes I noticed that V means Van
https://www.miniandmokeworld.com.au/identify-your-mini-or-moke-here/

Moke is now at Pavel's garage so he will sent me the photo of trailing arm.
there are more photos below

If you have the old photos from UK I will be very interested about history of my MOKE

Also fron panel looks like UK (fitted grill)

I hope we solve this mystery together, I would like to save this MOKE and put it back on the road
many thanks guys

Hi,

it looks like a big wheeler, 13" and if the numbers are at least right then late'ish 1968 maybe early 1969 going by the the body markers,

There will be a date code embossed to the right of the radiator AYK2214 part number.

they are different than the Mini and I dont know what they come from.
Any ideas?

Hi,

good rear trailing arms are hard to come by and very heavy when it comes to posting.

Given you like the wide looking tyres and you already have  Minis and I would assume spares, you could run the Moke with the 10" wheels.

Are there any photos of Australian MOKE from 68-69? So how they looks on 13 "wheels?
You write that I can put it on 10 "but I assume that at that time were Australian mokes where only on 13" (big wheelers)

I have a question about VIN,
is there a VIN matrix from which I could better read what vin there I probably stamped?
I would like to complete it so that the car had a real VIN and history (if it is real)
Thank you
cefo

Hi,

details of the VIN for that vintage can be found here, https://www.moke.com.au/about/identifying-mokes/677-body-numbers-yjbab and in your case it would likely have been YJBAB6R or YJBAB8R depending on the size of the engine fitted, 988 or 1098.

You would need to carefully remove the paint on the radiator cowling to see exactly what numbers and letters you have there. The YJBAV looks to be in the wrong place and if the 22.. whatever number is correct then there should be a YJBAB somewhere before that. Your local authorities may not really care for the correct VIN, just that it is a Factory wehicle with fibreglass guard flares. :)

Aussie mokes had fixed grills up until late 76.

your moke rear panel looks to be remade as we didn’t get the vertical
grooves until the gal body came along in 1980.

Your windscreen frame looks like a English on with the mirror mounts fixed to it, our mirrors were on arms fixed to the body below the windscreen.

Do you have grooves between the main body and the extensions to the mudguards, or take a photo underneath, the guard extensions were a seperate piece  spot welde to the main guard.

Hi,
thank you for all the tips & tricks
I will have to solve the VIN due to strict Czech road rules.
In any case, due to the diversity of the bodywork and the impossibility of getting the rear trailing arms,
I will put the MOKE on 10" wheels in English style.

Thanks again, I will inform as soon as the whole project moves again
Good luck to you all
