I have a set of old Sampson Mags in 4 x 98 PCD that i am going to have changed to 4 x 101.6.  I am also thinking about machining down the front face and spokes to put more of an inward taper to the rim face.

The problem is that the throw over the bed of my lathe wont fit the wheel.  My lathe is a Hafco AL960B with a gap bed, has anyone had any experience removing the gap on one of these Taiwanese/Chinese lathes?  I have read a few articles that suggest removing the gap and more importantly, refitting it can be more of a headf--- than it's worth.  I have tried and that gap is seriously tight.
