Pushrods 1275
« on: October 11, 2020, 07:56:20 PM »
Hello Boys and Girls,

Does anyone here know of anyone in Australia that, makes or sells shortened pushrods to suit a 1275 engine?

Cheers
Dave

Have you spoken to Matt Read? Alternatively, Graham Russell in Sydney would know.

Hi Guys and Girls,

I think I have sorted my shortened pushrod problem, did them myself.  I had to shorten them by 2.5 mm, a little research told me that the radius on the ball end is 11.15.  I didn't know you can actually buy radius gauges but now I am the proud? owner of a set of said gauges.

I ground the hardening off on a linisher and then set the lathe up to machine the ends to the correct radius.  Pushrods need to be hardened so I got some "Cherry Red" hardening compound (Hardite) is no longer available.  I heated them to cherry red with a carburizing flame and quenched them in good old canola oil.  A quick polish and all good, well nearly, the last one got a little too hot, actually white hot and melted one side.  When the new one arrives I will have the set ready to go.

Shortened pushrods

Cheers
Dave

Nice work, 2.5mm is a fair bit.
Does that make them nearly the same length as 998/1100 push rods?

Hi HP,

From what I have been told 2.5 to 3 mm is about the norm for shortened pushrods, depending on what rocker arm ratios you are running and what your rocker geometry needs to be.

I believe 998/1100 pushrods are about 7 mm shorter so not an option I could go to.

Will any of this actually do anything?  I have no idea but it's fun tinkering.  I will mention though that the difference between 1.5:1 and 1.3:1 rocker arms was indeed very noticeable.  I think the 1.5:1 ratio with a standard cam might be better than with the Kent cam I  currently have fitted.

Cheers
