1972 Leyland Moke wheel size?
« on: June 04, 2020, 03:48:48 AM »
Hello. I am in the USA and purchased a 1972 Leyland Mini Moke. The wheels it came with are 12 inches. The wheels are from around 2006. I have read that Leyland mokes had 13 inch wheels, is this true? The only wheels you can find in The USA are 13 x4.5 inch trailer wheels. I have heard they will fit since they are 4 on 4 101.6 bolt pattern. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Scott

Hi.

It is my belief that all mokes built after 1968 shipped with 13" wheels and a 101.6mm stud pattern. Prior to this were the "little wheeler" mokes with 10" wheels, which were the same as the Mini.

As for wheel width, I've heard that 185 is the sweet spot. 205s allegedly make the steering and turning circle less ideal. We are looking at 185/70/13s for ours currently.

With the 12" rim you should still be able to get tires that are a bit higher to match the rolling diameter of a 13".

Many Mokes in the USA don't match the supposed date or in fact country of build so the first thing would be to pop a up a couple of pictures of your Moke so we can take a look and confirm its origin. 13x4.5" is the most common size found on Mokes through the late 60's and most of 70's and a tyre size width of 165 or 175 would be suitable. The 185 Sharks mentions is for the 5.5" Sunraysia wheel that was fitted later in the 70's and 80's

Thanks. My Moke was a show car and have 2 huge binders of detailed paperwork. I have paperwork on the guy that restored it in Australia and it was a right hand drive converted to left hand. I think I will just keep the 12 inch wheels and get a higher side wall.
