Another body number querie
« on: November 04, 2020, 06:57:59 AM »
I have recently imported a 1973 Aussie Moke from Cyprus to the UK. It came with the Cypriot registration document bearing the number 1BAB8R8778 and initially, I could not find any number on the body to confirm this. From what I have read, Aussie numbers should start YJBAB. After discussions on the UK Moke forum, it was concluded that, as the Greek/Cypriot alphabet has no equivalent for the letters Y and J, they just dropped these letters and added a 1 instead. However, after seeing a photo on this forum showing where the body number is to be found, I cleaned a bit of surface rust and grime off of the radiator surround and found that the dents and ripples there actually showed the number which does indeed begin 1BAB (would be quite hard to read though without the reg document in front of you):

The engine number is a 10YFUH which I believe ties in with a 1973 1100cc motor so what's up with that 1BAB number? Anyone got any ideas?
