Speedo, Choke to Genuine. Differences
« on: March 31, 2021, 01:37:02 PM »
Hi Everyone,

My Moke came with a Choke speedo fitted, looks good but speedo error finally got to me so I changed back to the genuine version.

Here are a couple of things I found out about the differences between the two types.

First the choke speedo is plastic bodied so you need earth return wires for all the lights. (looks like a rats nest)

Second and most important, well to me anyway because it caught me unaware, the cables are different.  The Choke cable has different end sizes, speedo drive end, as per std Moke 2.9 mm square drive BUT the speedo head end is only 2.5 mm square drive.  Not a huge difference but enough that the speedo will not work but you do get a nice clicking sound ( if you like clicking sounds) as the smaller 2.5 mm end spins inside the speedo head unit.

If you look closely you can see the difference in the cable ends.

Cheers
Dave
