Mighty Moke - On the Road again!!!
« on: December 07, 2009, 01:07:15 PM »
After a lengthy (12mth) lay up due to terminal Gearbox failure MM is so very close to being on the road again.

The gearbox after a complete rebuild including replacement housing was refitted to the engine last week. This last week has seen me strip and repaint the Engine bay and Subframe.
All the associated bits and pieces have all had the cleanup and paint treatment as well.
Lots of new bolts, washers and nuts, all the Rubber seals and grommets replaced, New Alternator, the Starter was lovingly reconditioned by my mate Franko, Brake Pads, Fuel Filter, Heater and Fuel hoses, Radiator Pressure flush. Ball joints service, Lower Pivot bushes and it seems like lots of other bits and pieces.

I finally dropped the Engine back in yesterday and started reconnecting everything.
All going well I should be in a position to start MM in the next couple of days. My new Number plates are due end of the week so Timing is near perfect.

So far no real problems (touch wood) except for the Finance Manager. The biggest Pain to date was refitting the Clevis Pins to the Pedals / Master Cyls, I hate this job.

I took a lot of photos before stripping and carefully labeled everything as it came off. This has proven to be invaluable as reassemble has been a cinch. Pick a part, look at label, put it on.

Photos soon!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you'll hardly know old Mighty Moke when you get it back on the road Pete. She'll be like a new one  :)

Hope all goes smoothly and you're on the road again soon.

Thanks guys,
New number plate is SOC001, not Mokey but appropriate IMHO. Being one to save a cent I went with an old "R" or "S" series plate that are available now in SA but parameters are that had to start with R or S then two more letters then three numbers.
Not much done last night, friends dropping in, some people are just so inconsiderate :)
Refitted RH side hub, brakes and Remote Rod Control Box.
Tonight (with no interruptions) Exhaust, Carby manifold, Engine Steady's, Grease front end.

Good luck Dave with Thomas, yes a cruise will be on the books.

Good progress last night, Heater hoses connected (with a bit of cursing), Extractors and carby fitted, fuel lines connected. Fitted a flash little SPECO fuel filter, a bit of bling. Engine steady bars fitted, Clutch slave, Oil breather, Alternator, Choke cable and Acc cable but that has to come off again. Need a new one, not real smooth in action.

Question, when fitting the manifold gasket what way does the shiny face go.

Tonight Windscreen washer, Charcoal canister, new accelerator cable, finish connecting wiring, Grease, Brake and Clutch bleed, add oil,  grille, number plates (old ones), Bonnet Braiding, Wheels, check everything, I think that's about it??  Oh must not forget to connect the wiring to the reverse switch!!
Gee I might be able to go for a Midnight spin all going well.
TOUCH WOOD.

Photos to come, no time for them yet

Pete,

Saw this question a while ago somewhere - answer depends on what gasket you have. Genuine Rover is metal to the manifold, others are metal to the head.

Thanks Oh Great Rabid One, mine non genuine. Looks like I will have to take it off and turn it around, buggar!!

Good news though, finished all the wiring, and ancillaries to the point that I could start MM. And after building up oil pressure with plugs out, put plugs back in and she started immediately. ;D
Was fairly late so only idled for 5 mins.
Tonight, finish all the fluids, turn gasket around, go drivingggggggggggggg.

Does it really matter if the gasket may be on the wrong way?
What sort of gasket is it? unless its someting special I'd leave it the way it is.
If it's the normal grey type  ($6 from minis.com.au) I'd wait until you have it off for some other reason.

That is the one that has it stamped on it. But I agree with Moe, just leave it on and have a spare handy so if it doesn't last then you can swap it over.

Thanks, I have been thinking that, and now need no further convincing. it stays.
Is there a simple way of checking for leaks around manifold?
