Making Wipers Self Park
« on: August 16, 2010, 09:07:34 AM »
The wipers on the 1980 on Mokes, with the column switch and the black Preslite wiper motor do not self park as they were made. This came up recently in another thread (thanks halfpint) and while it is anoying, it is easily overcome, read on.

Late Moke Self Parking Wiper Modification

1.   Remove wiper motor, there is a connection internally between the wiper motor brush and the common of the park switch (terminal 53), These need to be separated. I usually leave the switch connected to terminal 53 and solder a separate wire on to the wiper motor brush holder. The terminals are open riveted to the body of the wiper motor, so I usually pass this new wire through  one of the rivets and put a 6mm spade type connector on to it.

2.   Wiring Mods. Most of what is in place is right, but you do need to do the following

a   Terminal 31b connect to Earth, there is already an earth (black) wire on terminal 31, just common it up with terminal 31b.
b   Run a wire from the brown / green trace wire of the wiper switch to terminal 53 on the wiper motor.
c   Terminal 53a on the wiper motor, connect this to fuse block, the terminal with all the green wires on it.

Your wipers will now self park  ;D

This is the wiper motor as it comes off the moke. You'll need to take the parking switch cover off, just undo the two little screws but careful you don't loose the little insulator sheet under the cover

This is the brush holder (the one on top left) in the motor that you need to remove the original wire from (that is connected to terminal 53) and solder a new on on to

This shows the terminal layout and were to bring the new wire out

Yep, that one seriously needs to go into the Repairs and Modification section on the main web page.

Easy when you know how. I reckon even I could do that mod  :)
