From the type of Gearbox and the fuel pump, that does look to be a 72 Export type, however it does have the wrong universal joints on it, unless it is from a Morris 1100S.

Yeap, that would have been the orginal colour at that time.

Terry, my 1980 Cali that I bought new from JE Allen was all black, but that's not the only one I've seen. It maybe that they came both ways?

I think some did come out all black, I have seen some in the full black and must admit never really thought of them as coming from the factory but obviously some did. In my experience the majority of what I have seen though seems to be the alloy componenets were un painted.

Didn't someone post some photos recently of engines sitting on pallets waiting to go in new mokes at Enfield.
Tried serching for it but can't find it and I can't remember if you can see the whole engine or not.

I don't remember them on here Nicko - but there is a photo like that on page 62 of TME issue 16. It shows two UK motors on a pallet with 'MOKE' written in white chalk across the radiators. They are definately all black. No date but I'd guess around 1978.

Mind you, I just had a look at the most original of mine (79) and the paint has all fallen off that neatly you would almost swear that the transfer housing and wok had never been painted! There is a few traces left near the starter where there were some runs, and the coil has been oversprayed too. My 81 A+ has heaps of black paint left, but I can't guarantee it's factory paint (although it does look like it).

I'd put that photo at 1977 or 1978.

There are Mini's on the line and a crate of Californian Front bars there.

The Mini finished in October 1978 and the Californian started in 1977.

Hard to make out for sure, but those engines look to be 998's.

The motor that was in my moke (998) was blue, the 1275 that is in it now was black. Gearbox and clutch housing were black as well (a lot had peeled off however). I will post some pics (in a day or two qs i am at the cricket tomorrow) or you could search through my rebuild post and find them as well..

Some of the UK engines were blue, but I'm not sure which ones and when.

This is by no means definitive but as I recall the engine colours went something like;

850 Mini           Green  (UK Engine)
850 Moke          Green (UK Engine)
998 Deluxe Mini  Gold   (Aust Engine)
Mini K               Gold   (Aust Engine)
Moke 1100        Gold    (Aust Engine)
Clubman (1100) Blue     (Aust Engine)
Moke 1100         Blue    (Aust Engine ~1971)
Clubman 998      Black   (UK Engine) 1975 on
Moke 998          Black    (UK Engine) 1975 on
Mini 1275 LS      Black    (UK Engine) 1978 only
Moke 1275         Black    (UK Engine) 1979 on

If anyone would like to add to this, go for it.

I purchased mine new in 1980 and the motor, clutch housing and gearbox were all black.

The black has mostly gone from gear box and clutch housing.
I think this is because it gets covered with a blanket of oil and dust which softens the paint over time.

Apart from colours can one tell in what year the engine was built by looking at the engine number?
