Hi,

there is a connection with the Jeep in that the British Army wanted a 4wd vehicle like the Willys Jeep and the best they could come up with was a twin engined Moke that was rejected and shelved until it later released in 2wd form. I understand the Ant and the Gypsy were other offerings, but i could be wrong about them.

You are on the money there Terry. The Ant was developed primarily for offering to any interested Army. It got as far as pre-production types (I think about 30 were made) but then got cancelled when the BMC behemoth merged with Rover and the Ant was considered a direct competitor to the Land Rover. Dumb, dumb, dumb, fail, fail, fail  ::)

The Gipsy on the other hand was an Austin copy of the Land Rover.

I'd love to have an Ant.

There is at least one in Australia, maybe two.
