My only thoughts are that it is the long way for most considering Terry's route when the goal is to get to Tamworth and enjoy the Roundup.

A good point MMD. Last Round Up I posted a few different "interesting" routes into Tamworth from various directions (which I'll have to dig up and re-post), but very few people took them up. When I spoke to people about it at the event most people said their main goal was just to get there as quick as possible and without the risk of back roads. Travelling in a convoy such as Terry's does of course reduce the risk of getting stranded and give people a bit more confidence.

Don't forget the Round Up is basically a driving event - we will be out and about every day of the event.

Terry suggested we do part of the last leg as one of the runs at the Round Up, but unfortunately it's missed the final cut  :(

That said, the route Terry plans on taking is  about as scenic a drive as you will get from Sydney to Tamworth with some great Moke roads and a good option for those who can't get enough  :). I imagine it would have to add a good couple of hours to the trip for Sydney siders as opposed to going up the New England highway though.

There are other routes from Sydney to Tamworth which bypass the freeway and will take you along more scenic inland roads (more scenic than the highway - not Terry's run) and avoid a few of the bigger towns/high traffic areas, which add virtually no time to the trip. These are basically either the Putty Rd or Great North Rd. Unfortunately these will only take you as far as Singleton (about half way) but at least you will only have about 3-4 hours on the New England Highway. By then you are well and truly into rural NSW though, so at least avoid all the messy traffic areas of the coast and Upper Hunter. I'll put up some details of these in a seperate thread for those who can't meet up with the Vic group

Hi all,
Just past Raymond Terrace is a small, quite town called Karuah, it has a nice Big 4 caravan park tucked away next to a wharf that juts out into the Port Stevens bay. Prices very reasonable as well.
Cabins are pretty new and very comfy, staff also enjoyed a laugh!
A short walk is an RSL Club with a nice Bistro.
Just a suggestion in that area.

Ok. Now that time is getting closer I reckon I'd better get organised
Looks like I may be travelling to tamworth alone - yep - just me and cabsav!
Provided she comes back from the mechanic where she is having a little holiday
while I do a quick trip to Townsville (tomorrow to Monday) to see my lil bro for his 50th.
Been looking at maps and thinking ingesting to west wyalong for first night.
Dubbo for the second and "hopping" into tammy on the third day.
Probably leaving Melbourne on the Tuesday.

So - is any one else heading that way?

Or know of a safe stop over place to pitch my tent on the way?

Thanks folks!

Hi,

We are no longer heading up the Hume Highway to Tamworth now, instead taking a more scenic route around the south east corner of the country and follow the coast up to Sydney.

The plan is now to leave on Saturday morning and head east down to Gippsland and make our around past Eden taking in the sights and smelling the roses as head up to Nowra for Monday evening and catching up with the locals. Leaving Tuesday morning to bypass the boring bits of  the Sydney road network, which is probably most of it, around the and take the scenic route suggested by the locals to Maitland or little further north for Tuesday night stopover. Wednesday will still be via Thunderbolts Way around to arrive in Tamworth on Wednesday afternoon, or people have the option to go up the main raod if they wish to get there earlier.

The return trip will see a couple of Mokes dashing back to Melbourne Monday and Tuesday for work on Wednesday while I and Homey are looking at taking a more leisurely route back home with few spots of interest penciled in.

At the moment our little convoy consists of Myself and Cujo, Homey and Dianne, MoeMoke and Family, Biggles and St Ruth with possibly Samm, Ainsley and Smokey around the Sydney leg. If anyone else would like to join us along the way, just let me know and we can keep you informed.

G'day All,
For those of you who are heading up and planning
to be at Nowra by Monday evening. Ruth and i as well as
Alan and Vicki would like you to come to our place for a
BBQ and get together for the evening. We also have some
familiy size tents tents we'll be putting up so you can stay
if you wish for the night, before we head off on Tuesday.
No need to bring anything we'll have it all covered.

            Cheers T R & A V :)

Hi all,
Pencil me in to be picked up on the way through. Terry- where would be the best place for me to hook up with you guys and on what day/time? Just so I can get onto the van park and book and extra night or two.

I'm even tempted to backtrack to meet up in Nowra and drive from there with the bunch- if I'm welcome.

Thanks

Not really sure exactly which way or when we are will be going past other than Tuesday morning sometime. I am hoping for a bit of local supervision to lead us around the city so if you don't come down to Nowra and can sugest a good route maybe we can meet you just a little south of where you are and you can lead us north.

Thinking ill just find you guys early Wednesday morning where ever you decide to stop for the night on Tuesday and do the days drive to Tamworth. Seems almost pointless driving 3 hours backwards one day to back track and stay an hr or so from my house. So when you have decided on a route let us know where the stop will be and I'll be there before the set off time.

Thanks

not that I know of Samm  ;)
Last I heard of was we're staying first night  between Orbost to Eden
Second night around Nowra, but haven't planned much after that.
We shall certainly be in contact before we head off.
