The wiper motor is installed, the loom is in place and I've even bought a replacement wiper switch.

Next job is to attach the wires - but what goes where!!

Anthony,

You are in luck, un like the last person to ask this question, because the bit of paper I scribbled it down on when I did Kinga's car has turned up after taking a small jaunt to the Muster and back and being found on the floor.

Your switch is different to what I have seen, but some of the numbers do correspond.

Motor               Pin     Purpose
------               ----     ----------
Black/Green       1      ???
Red/Green         2      Slow Speed
Black/Red          3      Fast Speed
Blue/Green        4      Park
Black                 5     Earth

Switch             Pin      Purpose
--------            ----     ----------
Black/Grean    31b     ???
Red/Green       53      Slow Speed
Black/Red        53b    Fast Speed
Blue/Green      53a     Park
Black              31        Earth
Green             30       Power from Fuse.

Looking at your switch it is difficult to translate all the numbers to what is on the standard switch so I think your are going to need to play with a multimeter or globe tester and see what the switch does.

The logo looks like a Hella. If it is, your auto shop should have the Hella catalogue and in that under each swicth, and flasher can, is the wiring schematics for it. Might pay to photo copy that.

The connections to the wiper motor fitted fine, but I have only 5 spades on the switch and two of them seem to require the same +ve connector - and 6 possible wires to connect HELP!!!

........................15..............................

.........53M.........53S.............31............

.......................30/31..........................

Even with the instructions I'm even more confused than ever.

I found this set-up for a 1977 mini - but it fails to tell me which connector is which.

From memory the original wiper system pulses reverse polarity at the park position to bring the wipers to a quick stop at the park position.  I think that is the mystery wire in the system.

Have a look at this - I found some MG info that used the same (almost) wiring colours and explaned how the set up worked

Anthony,

Looking at the writing on the diagram you are trying to wire up a intermittent control unit as the wiper switch. According to your diagram there is a another switch which acts as the wiper switch.

I think you have the wrong unit.

Is the unit Hella as the writing suggests.

Yes this is the "Hella Intermittent Wiper Switch". This is the only wiper switch that Hella sell - and the only one I've seen that looks the part.

There is a fairly decent on/off style 'clunk' at its full anti-clockwise position that suggests there might be some hope for the unit doing just that.

Can the wise please let me know if I'm barking up the wrong tree - this is the only bit of wiring I have left to do.

Happy Christmas one and all,

Tony

I had a go at wiring up the wiper.

On the motor:

Position 1 is Fast Speed
Position 2 is Slow Speed
Postions 3 and 4 - one must be positve 12V and the other to earth via the park switch position.
Position 5 is Earth.

I wired up the Hella unit to Fast and Slow and the unit switches on the motor, lets it do a few cycles, switches off for a second and cycles again ie. it stops the wiper motor intermittently rather than wiping the windscreen once intermittently.

Could someone please let me know which terminal on the motor is supposed to be positive, 3 or 4?

Thanks,

Tony

Anthony,

looking at your previous posts I still think you have the wrong switch for what you are trying to do.

You have an Intermittent Switch which according to the pictures you provided  is something that works in conjunction with the normal Wiper switch. I suspect it is intended to be used in cars with working wipers but no intermittent capabilities.

Looking at your first diagram it seems to just tap into the supply wire going to the Motor.

It is unlikely it will be wired sufficiently to handle Park, again that is a function of the wiper switch not the intermittent unit.

As for what pins do what on the motor they are still the same as i listed earlier.

I found this interesting web page:

http://users.mrbean.net.au/~rover/Series%20IIA%20Electrical%20System.htm

Thanks Terry,

I just removed my motor from the car, found a maginifying glass, a good lamp and have managed to find the code numbers on my motor.

Position numbers acording to my photo:

Postion One: Fast speed 53b
Position Two: Slow speed 53
Position Three: 31b to Earth via switch
Position Four: 53a 12V for self-parking
Position Five: Earth 31

I even found out what each number means (DIN 72552 numbering):

53b      Wiper (shunt winding)
53        Wiper motor, input (+)
31b       Return line to negative battery terminal or ground, via switch      or relay (switched negative)
53a       Wiper (+), self-parking switch-off
31        Return line to battery - battery terminal or ground, direct

Yep, I too think I'm flogging a dead horse with the Hella unit - I guess I'll have to work out what's suitable from the Cole Hersee range.

I'm thinking about 75228-04 "Dynamic Motor" 12-24Volt 5 pin Off/Park - Low - High            ... but it only has 5 pins!

Anyone in the market for a second hand Hella unit?

Anthony, the correct switch is available from Northern Mini for about $35. Its made by the same mob that designed the wiper motor. There is some black magic going on with wiper motor wiring, including the use of a resistor wire that gives the slow speed through a somewhat dodgy process.

Anyhony,

Hang on to the Hella unit and once you get the right switch you can use the the Hella unit to add intermittent control which would be a rare thing to find on the Moke.
